Hello Sailors!

Labour Day commemorates the struggle for an eight-hour working day. New Zealand workers were among the first in the world to claim this right when, in 1840, the carpenter Samuel Parnell won an eight-hour day in Wellington.

Labour Day was first celebrated in New Zealand on 28 October 1890, when several thousand trade union members and supporters attended parades in the main centres. Government employees were given the day off to attend the parades and many businesses closed for at least part of the day.

Have a great weekend, whether on or off the water!

Yachtfinders Global

Swashbucklers Restaurant

Auckland’s vibrant waterfront — two iconic names, one enduring story of connection, character, and community.  Swashbucklers was founded by the unforgettable Ginger Gibbs, a man whose energy could light up a room and a harbour in equal measure. As it happens, Ginger and I both went to St Paul’s College — and even back then, he was one of a kind. His legacy lives on in every corner of Swashbucklers, a place that feels like home to locals and visitors alike. The menu? It’s barely changed in nearly three decades — and that’s exactly how it should be. Like The White Lady, Swashbucklers is an institution. It’s where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and traditions are kept alive .I was lucky to join their recent birthday celebration, and it was heartwarming to see some of Ginger’s old schoolmates celebrating their own birthdays.  Proof that some places — and people — never fade from memory. And who could forget Ginger’s legendary Tasman crossing from Sydney Harbour Bridge to Auckland Harbour Bridge? A feat still whispered about in boating circles today. Classic Ginger. Yachtfinders Global and Swashbucklers have weathered the tides of time together.

Here’s to the next 28 years of adventure — on and off the water.

Come on down to Swashbucklers on Friday, 31st October for our annual Halloween Party! Enjoy a frightfully fun night on the waterfront with spooky vibes, great tunes, and plenty of laughs. Dress to impress (or terrify!) for your chance to win best costume prizes.

Delicious drinks, top music, and Auckland’s best waterfront atmosphere — all at Swashbucklers Seafood Restaurant & Bar, where the sea meets the spooky!

Joke of the Week

Why are fish so smart?

Because they live in schools!

Recipe of the Week:

Slow Easy Chicken at Sea

  • 2 chicken thighs per crew member, bone in, skin removed
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 400g can chopped peeled  tomatoes
  • 250ml chicken stock
  • 1 med lemon, sliced unpeeled
  • bay leaf
  • 1 cup pitted kalamata olives drained, or
  • seasonal veges
  • large handful button mushrooms,
  • 2 large potatoes for each crew member, quartered, skin on, knob of butter

Whisk together eggs, cottage cheese, green chillies, coriander, garlic powder and salt. Add generous grind of black pepper. Stir through grated cheese, sweetcorn and baby spinach.
In separate bowl mix flour, cornflour and baking powder. Add to corn and spinach mixture Mix until well combined. Heat generous glug of oil in pan over med-high heat. Spoon rounded ¼ C  batter into pan. It’s a stiff batter so flatten it with back of spoon. Cook for around 2” each side until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat until all batter is used.
Serve with some yoghurt swirled with spicy chutney.
