Each week we enjoy bringing you up-to-date local and international news, along with the boats that we proudly represent from Absolute, Selene and Hylas and a brokerage line-up that we sell here and around the world.

Hello Sailors

The notion that 'European boats aren’t built for New Zealand conditions' is outdated but the comment sometimes appears around boat show time via the opposition. The comment doesn’t reflect the reality of modern boatbuilding. European manufacturers design vessels to meet some of the world’s toughest maritime standards, including CE Category A and B certifications, which often exceed local requirements. These boats are engineered for a wide range of challenging sea states — from the rough, steep waves of the Mediterranean Meltemi to the unpredictable swells of the Bay of Biscay.

In fact, many European boats excel in areas critical to New Zealand conditions, such as efficient hull design for long-range cruising, superior seakeeping across a range of speeds, and ergonomic interiors that prioritise comfort and safety.

Selene 80 Explorer: A True Ocean Voyager in exceptional condition

This custom yard‑built Selene 80 has had one careful owner, a full‑time crew, and a decade of real expedition use—yet it’s still in exceptional condition. Extended from the Selene 78, it was built for serious range, redundancy, and offshore reliability.

Twin Cummins engines, two generators, TRAC zero‑speed stabilizers, hydraulic thrusters, dual watermakers, and nearly 10,000 liters of fuel give it true ocean‑going capability. The 4‑cabin layout plus crew space makes it an excellent liveaboard platform.

For anyone seeking a proven long‑range explorer with meticulous care and real‑world pedigree, this Selene 80 is one of the strongest options in Asia.

  • 2 x 420g cans drained
  • 3 spring onions, chopped
  • 1 small red capsicum (200g), finely chopped
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • ½ c self-raising flour

    Quick tomato relish:
2 large tomatoes (330-350g), finely chopped
1 garlic clove, peeled but whole
    2 T sugar
    3 T red wine vinegar

To make relish, place all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 12-15 minutes until slightly thickened. Discard garlic clove.

To make fritters: heat large non-stick frying pan to medium-high and spray lightly with oil. While pan is heating, mix corn, spring onion & red capsicum together & season well with S & P. Add eggs & stir through before adding flour & combining well.

Drop ¼ c mix per fritter into frying pan, turning after 2-3". Serve with a salad & tomato relish
